Chat Noir Chalkboard Sign



It’s no secret that I love Chat Noir! There’s just something intriguing about him, maybe it’s his mysterious air or those deep yellow eyes. Who knows? In any case he works well in a lot of different art projects. 

When I saw this chalkboard sign my first inclination was to pass on it because I don’t find chalkboard sign projects very inspiring.  The carving on the sign was beautiful and the subtle grey color gave the piece depth and character so I put it in my cart although I had no idea how I would use it. 

Since the carvings on the sign reminded me of 18th century French architectural carvings the piece should have a French theme.  All of the embellishments used to create this sign reminded me of France-Chat Noir, lavender flowers and of course the Eiffel Tower.

Materials:

SVG cuts Maple Manor cutting file for Chat Noir

Recollections paper flowers and rose

Martha Stewart leaf paper punch

EK Success Fleur de lys paper punch 

Olive green, light grey, yellow, light purple, rose and black card stock

Paris svg cutting file from Silhouette Design Store

Recollections purple butterfly

Recollections light purple spray ink

Decorative chalkboard sign-I used Recollections  

1.  Using the Maple Manor files, resize Chat Noir to 4 inches for the cat and slightly larger for the outline.  Cut Chat Noir and his outline out of black card stock. Glue the cat to the outline. Glue a small scrap of yellow card stock behind the cat’s eyes and use a black sharpie to make his pupils and set aside.

2.  Cut the Paris title at 4 1/2 inches in length out of light purple card stock and distress the edges lightly with the distress ink  

3.   Cut the Eiffel Tower at 5 inches high out of light grey card stock. Emboss the tower with the Swiss dots embossing folder and ink the edges with distress ink.  Cut a flourish out of light purple card stock sand ink the edges with distress ink.

4.  Spray the flowers with purple ink to give them more depth of color.  Set aside to dry.

5.  Punch a fleur de lys out of light grey card stock and apply distress ink.  Punch 7 leaves out of olive card stock.

6.   Attach “Paris” to the chalkboard with foam dots. Apply a small pearl to the top of the Eiffel Tower, in the “A” and in the fleur de lys to dot the “i”.

7.   Glue flowers to the top of the chalkboard sign.  Glue four leaves under the edges of flowers.  

8.  Glue the butterfly to the upper corner of the sign.  

9.  Use foam dots to attach the tower to the lower right edge of the sign. Glue the flourish over the upper portion of the tower.  Use foam dots to attach Chat Noir to the tower place him in the middle of the tower so that his tail hangs just below the base of the right leg of the tower.  Glue a flower below the base of the tower on the lower left side.  Glue a purple rose just above the fleur de lys and glue leaves under the edges of the rose.  

10.  Attach small pearls to the fleur de lys and the ends of the flourish.

Portraits

     As an artist I love painting portraits. Up until recently all of my portraits have been of animals, mostly dogs. I decided to move out of my comfort zone to people. I chose the three people that I found interesting: Alice Cooper, James Garner and Edgar Allan Poe. The portraits started out as sketches for a painting but quickly progressed into detailed drawings. Except to occasionally go out on exhibit these portraits never leave my studio. Speedy Recovery Card

  When I have a creative block or just need to take a break while my oil painting dries I like to make cards. They are so much fun to make. I usually start with a theme and then ad lib as I go along.  This card started with a speedy recovery theme. Next I cut a car, bunny, trees, sign and clouds using Tim Holtz dies. I drew a horizon line with pencil on white card stock and applied blue distress ink to create the sky. The grass is cut from green patterned paper. For the road I cut a strip of black card stock and applied gold washi tape for the center line. The bunny, clouds and sign were cut from white card stock. The trees were cut from light and dark green card stock and the tree trunks and sign post were cut from scraps of brown card stock. Then I used my Silhouette Cameo 4 to cut the heart shaped balloons from pieces of purple, pink and dark turquoise card stock. I used coordinating distress ink to shade the balloons.
